Classic Chevy's - 1956 Chevrolet
Author : Steven Farber
Chevroletplaned to keep its remarkable reputation for style, more power and more refinements going strong in 1956. "The Hot One's Even Hotter"! "Loves to go - and looks it!" declared one 1956 ad campaign. The 1956 Chevrolet was bigger and more important looking.
Although the basic body shell that was new in 1955 remained the same, detail changes were made to increase the car's already large appeal.Major styling changes involved the grille, tail lights and side trim.
The 1955 Chevrolet grille was very clean looking and the lattice work effect remained on the '56 but it was widened, parking lights were enlarged and it was raked slightly in on the bottom. At the rear, large chrome plated tail light housings were added. Each housed a round pointed tail light, a rectangular backup lamp and a small reflector.Access to the gas tank was through the driver side tail light housing.
Larger front and rear chrome bumpers gave the illusion of greater length. Stainless body moldings were redesigned on all three body styles.
The moldings served as a natural division points for two-tone paint jobs that were very popular on the 1955 and 1956 Chevy.Chevrolet offered 19 different body styles on the Bel Air, Two-Ten and One-Fifty, three more than in 1955.A new Bel Air Sport Sedan 4 door hard top, Two-Ten Sport Sedan 4 door hard top and a Two-Ten Beauville 9 passenger 4 door station wagon were added.
The best seller among the '56 Bel Air's was the four door sedan and Sport Coupe. The 1956 Sport Coupe 2 door hard top has always been a very popular car among collectors. The Nomad was back in 1956 and was described as a sport station wagon due to it 2 doors, great styling and color choices.
The 1956 Chevrolet color options were 10 solid colors and 14 two-tone combinations.Popular solid colors were onyx black and matador red, while india ivory / dusk plum and india ivory / twilight turquoise were popular two-tones.The new "Super Turbo Fire" V-8 was the existing 1955 Chevy 265 cubic inch with a special power pack kit consisting of a special intake manifold, higher lift cam, dual exhausts and a four barrel carburetor.
This kit increased the horsepower to 205 which was 14 percent above the 1955 engine at 180 horsepower. If you wanted more power Chevrolet offered a 2-4 barrel (2-four's) that achieved 225 horsepower. In 1956 Chevy was beginning to win the horsepower war both on and off the race track.Accessories were a big hit in 1955 and with the 1956 Chevrolet. For the first time you could add seat belts. All weather air conditioning was an option at $430.00. Other items included compass, traffic light viewer and Kool Kooshions.
The 1956 Chevrolet is often overlooked and it shouldn't be! While the 1956 Chevrolet did bring a number of first, it can not compare with the previous year or the following one, as the best was yet to come. The 1957 Chevrolet (Part 3)Steve Farber is an author and auto related web site publisher. Learn more about the "Hot One's"! GM's Classic 1955 Chevrolet, 1956 Chevrolet and 1957 Chevrolet at his three web sites by viewing lots of seldom seen "Vintage Chevy Ad" pictures of body styles, body colors, interior colors. Chevrolet history
Chevrolet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
North American historyChevrolet was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. Louis Chevrolet was a race-car driver, born on December 25, 1878, in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. William Durant, founder of General Motors, had been forced out of GM in 1910 and wanted to use Louis Chevrolet's designs to rebuild his own reputation as a force in the automobile industry.
As head of Buick Motor Company, prior to founding GM, Durant had hired Chevrolet to drive Buicks in promotional races.[citation needed]Chevrolet first used its "bowtie"[1] logo in 1913. This logo is said to have been designed from wallpaper Durant once saw in a French hotel.
Another theory of the design of the mark is from the Swiss cross, because Louis Chevrolet was from Switzerland. In 1915, Durant made a trip to Toronto, Ontario to determine the possibility of setting up production facilities in Canada.
After meeting with "Colonel Sam" McLaughlin, whose McLaughlin Motor Car Company manufactured the McLaughlin-Buick, it was agreed that the Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada, operated by McLaughlin, would be created to build Chevrolet cars in Canada. Three years later, the two Canadian companies were purchased by GM to become General Motors of CanadaLtd.[citation needed]By 1916 Chevrolet was profitable enough to allow Durant to buy a majority of shares in GM.
After the deal was completed in 1917, Durant was president of General Motors, and Chevrolet was merged into GM, becoming a separate division. In the 1918 model year Chevrolet introduced the Model D V-8 series 4-passenger roadster and 5 passenger touring. These cars had 288ci, 35 hp (26 kW) engines with Zenith carburetors and 3 speed transmissions.Famous Chevy models include the large and luxurious Impala (1958) and the innovative air-cooled rear-engined Corvair (1960 - 1969).
Chevrolet had a great influence on the American automobile market during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet. The basic Chevrolet small-block V-8 design has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1955, longer than any other mass-produced engine design in the world auto industry, though current versions share few if any parts interchangeable directly with the original.
Descendants of the basic small-block OHV V-8 design platform in production today have been much modified with advances such as aluminum block and heads, electronic engine management, and sequential port fuel injection, to name just a few improvements over the 54-model-year design life of the engine concept to date.
The small block Chevrolet V-8 is used in current production model (2008) Impala sedans, a variety of light and medium duty Chevrolet trucks, and the current generation Corvette sports car. Depending on the vehicle type in which they're installed, they are built in diaplacements from 5.3 to 7 litres with outputs ranging from 303 to over 500 horsepower (370 kW) as installed at the factory.
It will also be used as a performance option in the forthcoming (2009 model year) revival of the Chevrolet Camaro. The engine design has also been used over the years in GM products built and sold under the Pontiac. Oldsmobile, Buick, Opel (Germany) and Holden (Australia) nameplates.
Recently, 6-litre, 400 horsepower (300 kW) versions of the small-block V-8 designed initially for the C-5 and C-6 Corvettes have been installed in factory-built high performance versions of the Cadillac CTS sedan known as the CTS-V

Chevrolet Impala
Chevrolet Impala
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-sized automobile built for the Chevrolet division by General Motors. Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen."From 1958 until 1965, the Impala was Chevrolet's most expensive full-size car. In 1965, Chevrolet introduced the more-expensive Caprice.
The Impala in the later 1960s was typically positioned just below the top luxury trim Chevrolet Caprice, but above the most economical models such as Biscayne or Bel Air, and most readily distinguished by a pair of 3 rather than 2 taillights at its rear. It vied against other full size cars such as the Ford Galaxie 500 and the Plymouth Fury.
One of General Motors and America's most successful auto nameplates, the Impala was often the best-selling automobile in years when full-sized cars dominated sales. The 1965 sales of over one million units still stands as a record. The current version is the 8th best-selling vehicle and 5th top-selling car in the United States, and has the distinction of being the top-selling American-nameplate sedan, according to Reuters Top 20 Best-selling Vehicles Scorecard for calendar year
